Engineering life-saving medical device blades with extreme precision for a leading U.S. manufacturer’s coronary intervention tool.
With more than a century of experience in specialized blade manufacturing, Crescent Manufacturing was equipped to address both the technical and operational demands of the application.
Crescent Manufacturing approached these constraints through focused engineering and process refinement.
The team worked to understand the unique properties of the required alloy and how it would behave under different manufacturing conditions.
By adapting manufacturing methods and working through the material challenges, the team was able to produce blades that met both structural and functional requirements.
This included custom approaches to pressing, heat treatment, and grinding.
Through iterative refinement and rigorous quality control, Crescent Manufacturing achieved a significant improvement in production yield.
Our usable output increased from approximately 30 percent to over 90 percent.
A leading U.S. medical device manufacturer partnered with Crescent Manufacturing to develop blades for a safer, less invasive coronary intervention tool. The application required extreme precision and reliability, with no margin for defects in performance or material behavior.
This partnership demonstrates Crescent Manufacturing’s ability to engineer solutions for the most demanding medical applications, where precision, reliability, and zero tolerance for defects are non-negotiable.
Early in development, several critical challenges emerged that required both material innovation and manufacturing process refinement. Blades could not exhibit any warping, bowing, or corrosion under any conditions. Blades needed to maintain flexibility to bend with the catheter during insertion.
The required alloy proved difficult to press, heat treat, and grind within standard processes. Our engineers created a custom process to achieve the alloy’s required flexibility.
Following the initial success, Crescent Manufacturing has continued to manufacture and refine these blades in collaboration with the customer. Ongoing efforts have focused on improving processing efficiency, reducing scrap, and lowering lead times and cost.
This project reflects our ability to take on complex blade designs that others avoid and deliver consistent, production-ready solutions over the long term.
Through continual development, we reduced scrap, lowered lead times, and decreased production costs. The result was more, higher quality output for the client.
We achieved zero defects in warping, bowing, or corrosion across production runs.
Reliable cutting quality across varying raw material conditions.
Process improvements led to production yield increasing from 30% to 90%.
